Our Neighborhood

Nestled in the southwestern corner of the Bronx, Spuyten Duyvil is a neighborhood rich in history and natural beauty. Its name, derived from the Dutch "Spuyten Duyvil," has been interpreted in various ways, including "Spouting Devil" or "Spinning Devil," likely referencing the area's once-turbulent waters. A popular legend, immortalized by Washington Irving, tells of a trumpeter who vowed to swim the creek "in spite of the devil," highlighting the treacherous currents that characterized the waterway.

The neighborhood's development gained momentum in the late 19th century with the arrival of the New York Central and Hudson River Railroad, transforming Spuyten Duyvil into a sought-after residential area. Today, it boasts a blend of architectural styles, from historic estates to modern high-rises, all set against the backdrop of the Hudson River and the Palisades. Residents and visitors can enjoy the serene green spaces of Henry Hudson Park, which features playgrounds, sports facilities, and a monument dedicated to the famed explorer.

Spuyten Duyvil's unique charm lies in its harmonious blend of urban convenience and natural splendor. The neighborhood offers panoramic views of the Hudson River, the George Washington Bridge, and the distant Manhattan skyline, making it a hidden gem within New York City.
